The Power BI variant for using Power BI elements in third-party applications

Power BI Embedded is a Microsoft Azure service that enables organisations to integrate Power BI analytics into other applications. Power BI elements such as reports, dashboards and tiles can be embedded in a web application or website.

Power BI Embedded is suitable for

  • ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) which develop applications for third party vendors
  • large companies that want to create a data analysis and visualisation application for internal users

 

Two Power BI Embedded Analytics solutions are available:

  •   Embedded for your customers Embedded for your organization
    Data The app also owns the data aimed at external users, app users do not need to log in using Power BI credentials The user also owns the data aimed at internal users, app users must log in using Power BI credentials (Azure AD authentication)
    Licence App users do not need a licence All app users need a Power BI licence
    Authentication Non-interactive authentication, apps use a service principal or a master user, for self authentication Interactive authentication, Apps use the app user's credentials to authenticate themselves

    With Power BI embedded, application developers can embed interactive reports and dashboards into apps without having to create data visualisations and controls from scratch.

  • REPORT USE WITHOUT POWER BI LICENCE

    With Power BI Embedded, Power BI content can be shared internally and externally without the need for additional Power BI Pro licences for report users (Embedded for your customers).

  • ANY NUMBER OF USERS

    With Power BI Embedded, any number of users can use the Power BI evaluations. Only users who publish BI content on a Power BI Embedded node need an additional Power BI Pro licence.

    The Power BI Embedded Analytics-Playgrounds offers a developer sandbox, API samples, showcases and a learning centre for application developers who want to learn about and try out Power BI Embedded Analytics.

  • ACCURATE SCALING

    With Power BI Embedded, a separate Power BI server is provided in the Cloud. The available resources can thus be precisely scaled.

  • EASE OF DEPLOYMENT

    Power BI Embedded includes APIs, SDKs and wizards to prepare the development environment up to the provision of analyses in the respective application.

Licence information

Power BI Embedded is available via Azure.

The total cost of a Power BI Embedded licence depends on the node type selected and the number of nodes deployed. The node types differ depending on the number of virtual cores and RAM.

Our tip: Microsoft recommends that independent software vendors purchase Power BI Embedded for their cloud-based embedded analytics components. According to Microsoft, companies should preferably use Power BI Premium. However, there are no restrictions on which edition a client buys. In certain cases, in addition to the app embedding, a P-SKU is recommended for (usually large) ISVs in order to benefit from the advantages of the pre-configured Power BI service in an organisation.
