Depending on the requirements, we model according to a Medallion Architecture or Data Vault: Data Vault where historization, auditability, and frequently changing source systems are key priorities; classic dimensional modeling where query and reporting performance are paramount.

    Two requirements that are often underestimated are also incorporated into the architecture. 

    First, the refresh logic: Which data needs to be available in near real time, which hourly, and which daily? Different loading frequencies and intervals have a major impact on how the processing layers are structured - and therefore on performance, capacity requirements, and costs. 

    Second, the level of data protection required: Which attributes contain personal or otherwise sensitive data also influences how the model is designed.

  • Integration of Existing Systems

    We connect your source systems, including existing data warehouses, data lakes, ERP systems, and business applications. Where appropriate, existing platforms remain in place and are integrated rather than replaced.

    As part of the integration process, we identify personal data (PII, Personally Identifiable Information) as well as other sensitive information. We document which attributes require special protection and incorporate these requirements directly into the data model - through pseudonymization, anonymization, separate processing layers, and an appropriate authorization concept. This ensures that data protection is built into the architecture from the outset rather than added later as a corrective measure.

    At this stage, we also define the required loading frequency and loading interval for each source - in other words, how up to date the data needs to be from a business perspective and what the source system can technically support. Both factors feed directly into the target architecture.

We follow the same logic Microsoft recommends for Fabric adoption: start small, grow big. After the assessment we therefore do not begin with your entire data landscape, but with a single business case - delivered as an MVP covering one module. This keeps risk and initial investment small, produces a visible result early, and creates the foundation on which the platform then grows in a controlled way.

  • Phase 1 - Assessment and Current-State Analysis

    Analysis of the existing data landscape, source systems, data quality, and governance setup. Identification of business requirements and prioritization of use cases.
    Outcome: documented current-state assessment with recommended actions.
    Typical effort: around two person-days for a straightforward starting point, and two person-days or more for more complex environments.

Why we do not quote blanket project durations

Every project comes with its own specifications and a different level of complexity. Blanket timelines would therefore mean little - and we would rather quote no figure than one that does not hold up in delivery. You receive a concrete effort estimate after the assessment.

What we can say from our project experience: initiatives are noticeably easier to deliver on Microsoft Fabric than with comparable tooling. Depending on the project we are talking about a factor of two to four - fewer interfaces, fewer tool breaks, less integration effort.

Its established HEBES benchmarking platform needed to be moved to a maintainable, scalable technology foundation — with additional data sources, data residency in Switzerland, and reliable anonymization of sensitive healthcare data.

What does a Microsoft Fabric project cost?

The cost of a Microsoft Fabric project has two parts: the capacity-based licence cost paid to Microsoft, and the consulting and delivery effort.

  • Licensing and Capacity Costs

    Microsoft Fabric is licensed on a capacity basis. You purchase a capacity (F-SKU) with a specific number of Capacity Units — either as pay-as-you-go or as a reserved capacity at a discounted rate. Additional costs include OneLake storage and, depending on usage, Power BI user licenses. You can find the latest prices in the official Microsoft pricing overview.

    We help you size the capacity appropriately: a capacity that is too small can limit performance, while one that is too large creates unnecessary costs. In practice, capacity sizing is one of the biggest cost levers in the entire project.

The storage location depends on the region of the Fabric capacity. For Swiss companies, Microsoft provides cloud regions in Switzerland with Switzerland North (Zurich) and Switzerland West (Geneva). This means that Fabric workloads and OneLake data can generally be stored and processed in Switzerland.

Proper architecture and configuration are important, as the storage location may vary for individual services, metadata, and additional features.
