Power BI November 2023 Updates Published on 23.11.2023 BI-Blog November 2023 Power BI update introduces several exciting features designed to elevate your data exploration experience. This month's release is packed with innovations, from enhanced visualization tools to improvements in data modeling and service capabilities. Reporting Button Slicer: A handy tool designed to redefine how you filter and interact with your data. As a sleek and flexible alternative to the tile slicer, the Button Slicer offers unprecedented customization, allowing you to control the shape, appearance, and layout of your design. Key features include adjustable grid layouts, overflow styles, and the ability to incorporate images through URL links. Reference Labels: This versatile tool allows you to add custom labels to new cards, providing relevant information, comparisons, key metrics, benchmarks, goals, and more in a concise and visually appealing manner. Reference labels support multiple data fields, allowing you to customize titles, values, and details. You can choose between horizontal or vertical layouts, set custom spacing and padding, and even add dividers for better organization. Q&A Visual Enhancements: Your Q&A visual is now empowered with suggested synonyms from Copilot. The Q&A visual now supports generative AI to ensure consistent and accurate answers based on the unique language used by report consumers. Copilot streamlines the process by generating suggested synonyms, making it easier to improve the quality of the Q&A experience. This feature is a significant step toward enhancing the precision and efficiency of Q&A interactions. Other Reporting Features: Azure Maps Visual now aggregates multiple data points at the same location, eliminating overlapping and providing a clearer visualization. The Narrative with Copilot Visual, formerly known as Smart Narratives, incorporates Copilot's unique ability to summarize data across your report, offering suggested prompts to help authors communicate insights effectively. Modeling Semantic Models: Datasets are now officially renamed to Semantic Models. This change reflects the substantial progress these models have made in becoming enterprise-grade semantic modeling technologies. The name adjustment aims to improve clarity and usability within the Power BI environment. DAX Query View: DAX Query View is a significant addition to Power BI Desktop. It is a fourth view that allows you to use DAX query language to discover, analyze, and see the data in your semantic model. This feature provides a powerful way to interact with your data model, allowing model authors to validate data and measures without the need to build visuals or use additional tools. Updates for Editing the Data in Power BI Service: In the Power BI Service, editing your data model becomes more intuitive with the ability to mark tables as date tables and rename/delete tables and columns. These improvements enhance the overall data modeling experience within the service. Service Explore (Preview): A noteworthy addition is the Explore feature which offers users a lightweight and focused experience for ad-hoc data exploration directly within Power BI. This feature is particularly useful for analysts or business users who need to quickly explore and understand new datasets without the complexity of building a complete report. Copilot for Power BI in Microsoft Fabric: Copilot's capabilities were brought to the Power BI web experience, helping users create reports and generate synonyms for fields, measures, and tables. Smart Narrative visual was enhanced with Copilot’s data summarization capabilities and it was re-branded to Narrative with Copilot. This visual is available in both Power BI Desktop and Service. OneLake Integration for Import-Mode Semantic Models: This feature is introduced in public preview, allowing seamless integration with OneLake for efficient data access. It simplifies data movement and accessibility for various user roles. Semantic Model Scale-out feature: With this new feature you can start experiencing increased query throughput, refresh isolation for uninterrupted analysis, and flexibility for advanced data refresh scenarios. Unlike its Azure Analysis Services counterpart, it dynamically adjusts to user demand without the need for detailed analysis or scripting, and its cost is based on usage. Show Visuals as Tables: This new view mode provides an alternative way to consume data, displaying visuals in a tabular format for users with different learning styles or those using assistive technologies. Stay tuned for more exciting updates in Power BI, as the platform continues to evolve and provide powerful tools for data visualization, exploration, and modeling. Whether you're a business user, analyst, or data scientist, these features aim to make your Power BI experience more customizable, intuitive, and insightful.
